Particleboard, or chipboard, consists of woodchips, flakes, shavings and sawdust which are compressed and bonded with heat and resin. It has smooth surfaces without knots or voids. Most chipboards incorporate recycled chipped timber of which the
proportion used in UK manufactured panels is typically between 65%-70%.
The manufacture of chipboard originated from the wish to utilise wooden waste and has since evolved into a carefully controlled and refined production process. Boards are now produced with smooth, sanded faces which allows for lamination, veneering and painting.
Flooring Grade chipboard comes complete with slip resistant and protective films while Furniture Grade chipboard is perfect for veneering for a decorative, yet cost effective, alternative to most solid woods. Different grades and thicknesses are available, enabling the product to be used in a variety of structural and non-structural applications.
Chipboard to be used in construction in Europe must comply with the Construction Products Regulation and be CE marked. In order to be CE marked, the product must comply with the harmonised European standard for wood-based panel products, EN 13986. This harmonised standard refers to EN 312 in order to specify chipboard panels.
The standard lists values that relate to product properties but they are not characteristic values to be used in design calculations. In order to use Chipboard in a structural design, characteristic values should be determined using EN 789 and EN 1058 or with EN 12369-1.
There are 7 grades of panel classification that chipboard (or particleboard) panels can meet the requirements for. These are listed in the h Quick Reference Guide for Chipboard below.
